This is a true story.

I was wandering around the old pueblo
Glad to have found a town that felt like home
I walked into a cafe I had nowhere else to go
And a girl behind the counter sweetly said "hello"

I was a bit taken aback
I said "hi and I'll just take my coffee black"
She handed it to me and I said "thanks"
She asked "mind if I come sit with you?
I'm about to go on break"

Oh Elyse I just cannot speak
So I might as well just...

We exchanged polite formalities
Then she told me some of here deepest held beliefs
She's written 3 novels, she wrote poetry
But she never, ever shown it to anybody

And then there was talk of some lonesome night
In south Chicago near a railroad line
She hopped a train and didn't know where it was going to go
Well she ended up here in the old pueblo

Oh Elyse I just cannot speak
So I might as well just leave

I might as well just leave
When I find a place to stay I realize I'm a born runaway

Well pretty soon she had to get back to work
I finished up my cup and left shortly after
Giving a wave as I walked out I think
Though I don't quite remember
I just wish I would've said more

Oh Elyse I just cannot speak
So I might as well just leave
